June 20, 2011 ICANN Approves Historic Change to Internet’s Domain Name System. Plan to Launch New Generic Top-Level Domains Is Approved in Singapore.

“ICANN has opened the Internet’s naming system to unleash the global human imagination. Today’s decision respects the rights of groups to create new Top Level Domains in any language or script. We hope this allows the domain name system to better serve all of mankind,” said Rod Beckstrom, President and Chief Executive Officer of ICANN.

The subject of domain name registrations came up again into public view with ICANN announcement of new gTLDs rules and regulations.

News media reported yesterday that you can register any name you want for $185.000.00 and you have to hurry up because applications are accepted during three months only. The information is misleading and incomplete as usual in case of news involving Internet underlining principles.

In short gTLD is “global Top Level Domain” where TLD is .com .net .org or any other currently existing 22 gTLDs.

Applying for gTLD has nothing to do with Domain Name Registration.
Process of applying for gTLD makes sense for business that wants to become a “Domain Name Registrar”.

The sum of $185,000.00 is an application fee.
You need to pay $5,000.00 deposit.
New application period starts 12 January 2012 and ends 12 April 2012.
The process of approval may take anywhere from 8 to 18 months.
There are plenty of stringent rules and regulations.
Rejections are common.

The best page to get credible details on new gTLDs is the “Fact Sheet” page at

http://www.icann.org/en/topics/new-gtlds/factsheet-new-gtld-program-14apr11-en.pdf

Domain Name Registration is the process of registering domain name in a given TLD.
If you just want to have a domain name, you register it at your favorite Domain Name Registrar trough Domain Reseller like GoDaddy, 1and1, eNom and hundreds of others. Domain Reseller is usually not the Domain Registrar.

When you register “my-domain.com”, “my-domain” is domain part and “.com” is TLD.
The cost is around $10.00 per year. If the name if available, the registration is processed as soon as you can type your billing information. Then you own the “my-domain.com” domain name and have to host it somewhere or hoard it as many people do. There are many ways to use the domain names, but this will be subject for another day.

It was close, but I am not going to be a millionaire after all.

My plan was to sell https.net on a recent Sedo auction for a million dollars. Am I kidding? Not! The place was right. I just did not do proper marketing campaign before the auction, like the pizza.com guys did. They sold their domain for $2,605,000.00. I got only $2,500.00 for my domain. Next time I am going to do a better job at marketing.

The first plan did not work, but all hope was not lost. Suddenly, yesterday I got another chance to be a millionaire. I received an email with a proposition to get $7,773,275.51 (50% of £7,800,000.00). All I need to do is to provide my name and a phone number to “Mr.Jason smith”.

Note to the reader: All quoted text is shown exactly as it is written in the email.

You see, “Mr.Jason smith” is “the credit manager in a bank here in the United Kingdom.” He writes:

“I am contacting you of a business transfer, of a huge sum of money from a deceased account. Though I know that a transaction of this magnitude will make any one apprehensive and worried, but I am assuring you that everything has been taken care off, and all will be well at the end of the day.”

Well, I will not keep you guessing. This is kind of a typical Nigerian Phishing email. I usually do not get this kind of nonsense emails because my mail system puts it in a safe place where nobody can see it. This one got trough to my junk folder because it is full of errors. For your amusement below are forensic details of the millionaire offer.

Email was sent from IP 80.89.185.37 which is allocated to Cobranet Limited, with the physical address:
plot 8, Rafiu Babatunde Street, Lekki Phase I, Lagos, Nigeria.

Next, the Russian mail server mail.starlink.ru scanned it for content and added SPAM to the Subject line.

From and Reply to are different email addresses, probably false.

Below are partial headers (technical details) of the email.

From: Jason Smith <jason231smith at yahoo.gr>
Reply-to: Jason231smith at hotmail.com
Subject: [SPAM] Be our trusted contact

Received: from mx.starlink.ru ([77.50.1.3])
Received: from 80.89.185.37 ([80.89.185.37]) by mail.starlink.ru

End of story. I am not a millionaire. Back to the drawing board.
