Coffee maximizer

I got tired of holding the coffee press to get the last drop of coffee goodness, so my folders came to help. Maybe it was the subliminal message from the Maxwell House coffee bag that prompted the invention. It could be the sense of urgency emanating from the folders containing federal tax information.

iPhone error 1602

You have tried to update iPhone firmware 1.1.3 to 1.1.4 and you got the picture above with the error text below:

The iPhone "Your-iPhone-Name-Here" could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (1602).

The solution shown here applies to iTunes on Mac running Leopard.

I believe that the new firmware requires more strict control of user privileges. The proper way to solve the problem is to login to user account owning the iPhone. When you login to new user account, open iTunes and plugin the iPhone, the message informs you about downloading and installing new firmware. Each user must have the new firmware in a file named /Users/user-name/Library/iTunes/iPhone\ Software\ Updates/iPhone1,1_1.1.4_4A102_Restore.ipsw

The simplest way is to have each user download and install the firmware. The file is large - 160 MB. If you have a lot of users, downloading is a waste of resources (time and space). The firmware update file can be downloaded once and copied to users folder. The firmware file iPhone1,1_1.1.4_4A102_Restore.ipsw must reside in /Users/user-name/Library/iTunes/iPhone\ Software\
Make sure that folder and file ownership are set to the current user.

For me the simplest way to copy files and folders between user accounts is from command line. Below are the Unix commands executed from Terminal. There are only three lines. I know you can combine them into one, but that would be cheating and complicating things. Substitute user1 and user2 with your values.

Explanation shown below.

1. (su -) switch to root user account
2. (cp -R) copy folder and its contents from user1 to user2
3. (chown -R) change permissions for the folder and its contents from user1 to user2

Unix commands shown below.

Direction of the slashes is important. Second line is long and may show here as being broken. It should be typed as one line. You can reduce size of your font untill the line has no break and copy and paste it.

Your-Mac:/ root# su -
Your-Mac:/ root# cp -R /Users/user1/Library/iTunes/iPhone\ Software\ Updates /Users/user2/Library/iTunes/
Your-Mac:/ root# chown -R user2 /Users/user2/Library/iTunes

I have upgraded four iPhones using this method. Let me know if this works for you.

Bestdomainsarehere no more

I just cancelled my reseller account with GoDaddy (also called Wild West Domains). After four years of their confusing interface, I am free. Moved my domains to 1and1 because they offer better prices and less, but sometimes still confusing, modern interface. Domains Priced Right, operated by GoDaddy, took over my clients, if there were any.

All of the domain registrars have problems. They like to challenge user's sanity with feature overloaded web interfaces. Guys, simplicity and fast database updates are the key. That is why I still pay higher prices for some domains registered with OpenSRS operated by Tucows. Their management interface is text based and simple. Database updates are instantaneous.

I have no more domains with NetworkSolutions. Their prices, $35 for a .com name, are you kidding or insane? Read the fine print of their service bundling advertising in detail. Ten years ago they used to be the only game in town. That would explain why their customer service has been arrogant with me. Take for example a simple question: "I would like to find out what domains use my DNS server named ns1.example.com", answer: "We do not have this kind of information". Who does? You operate .com Registry and own the database. This gives me two choices. Lookup 6,000,000 domain names or abandon the domain server name. They also used to offer 100 years domain renewals.

Another interesting and forgotten fact is that about ten years ago domain name registrations were free of charge.

Art Calendar with savings

An interesting calendar for the kids with savings for the parents.
Ask for it at the customer service counter in your local Publix.

Inside there is a coloring contest page and twelve coupons worth total of $21.00. You can use one coupon per month. The December coupon is worth $5.00. Not everybody will be patient to carry the coupons the whole year around. I did that last year and have set of coupons in my wallet for this year.

Confuse me not please

Chinese New Year gift box.
It contains extremely sweet candied fruits and nuts.

There are English words at the bottom of the yellow sticker:
"Extends new year's greetings the gift box"
I understand the idea, but the words make no sense.
Will have to collect more of this treasures of confusion.

Year of the Rat

The Year of the Rat has started on February 7, 2008.
It is going to be a "rat" year according to some predictions.

My Chinese cousins tell me that the same symbol ιΌ  is used for the rat and the mouse. Now it is clear to me why sometimes they call Mickey Mouse a rat.

Above is the picture of a calendar with a rat surrounded by pink mice.

I got the tail

We celebrated The Year of the Rat as usual, by eating out. One day early, to beat the crowds. Tomorrow we will celebrate again by eating at home. Steamed fish is my favorite. I like to eat a tail part.

My wife cooks a better fish as you can see below.
It also tastes super. We ate this one two days ago.

Please wait here

This guy was guarding a long waiting line at the Croissan'Time in Fort Lauderdale. The sign below said Please, Wait Here, so we did. We got some great looking pastries and baguettes to welcome the New Year with great tasting food.

Dim sum for breakfast

Today we had a family breakfast at the newly opened dim sum restaurant.

Dim sum is a traditional Chinese breakfast consisting of small dumplings and other small, bite size stuff to eat.

At the beginning my plate looked orderly and normal with vegetable dumpling, taro square cake and some hot sauces. I also ate the usual shrimp dumplings followed by not so usual baby squid, beef tripe and chicken feet. To help the stomach it is advisable to drink hot Chinese tea. I like the chrysanthemum tea sweetened with large sugar crystals.

Here are some chicken feet on a plate that is getting messier by the minute.

My way to judge the food is to wait half a day after eating it to see if any problems like wind, belching, cramps or other abnormalities develop. You can also anticipate good quality of ethnic food by the presence of the natives eating there. The restaurant is good. We will visit it again.

Marika Nemes Kadarka 2005

I got this wine as a Christmas gift from my mother's Hungarian neighbor. Hungarian wines have a very different taste than French or Italian wines. This one is semi sweet and tastes great with food and by itself. I am sure it will be loved by my guests who can not stand the traditional, tart red wines that I like. This becomes my first choice perfect wine for non wine drinkers replacing my previous recommendation for a perfect wine.
