I got impatient yesterday while restoring Parallels virtual machine. It would be great to be able to check on the progress of long tasks on one Mac from another one. You need Remote Desktop for that and that is not cheap.

Not really. The new Leopard has something called Screen Sharing. It works on the local network and even across the Internet, so you can check what is your Mac at the office doing right from your Mac at home. No software needed, just Leopard.

In System Preferences -> Sharing
turn the Screen Sharing: On

I did not check any boxes in Computer Settings because the choices did not sound safe, like Anyone may request permission to control screen or VNC viewers may control screen with password.

I changed access to
Allow access for: Only these users: put your account name here.

That is it. Now I can command my Mac in the office from my PowerBook in the living room or from anywhere I happen to be.
